DOHA - The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) Doha Chapter held a seminar at Ramada Hotel recently.

A keynote speaker on the occasion was Muhammad Bahemia, Partner Deloitte & Touché. He spoke on developments regarding and amendments to IFRS 7. He is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales (ACA) and has over 19 years of experience as an auditor.

IFRS 7 requires disclosures on the financial instruments applicable from January 1, 2007. "IFRS 7 is a disclosure revolution," said Bahemia.

He also talked of the background, changes, bringing unity to the accounting, treasury and regulatory functions, challenges and implementation plan of IFRS - 7.

The other keynote speaker was Hani Khoury, Partner ERS Deloitte & Touché. He spoke on corporate governance and business implications. Hani is a partner and country leader of our Enterprise Risk Services Middle East and has over 13 years of experience providing a range of professional consulting services and advice to some of the largest public and private corporations in Australia and the Middle East. "Corporate governance is about promoting corporate fairness, transparency and accountability," said Khoury.

Talking on the regional perspective on corporate governance Khoury said "Qatar has long way to go as far as corporate governance is concerned as compared to other GCC countries. Overall assessment and comparison with other GCC countries showed that Qatar businesses quickly look more into corporate governance compliance."
