DOHA - The Awqaf section of the Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has spent QR65.5m on various projects, including QR15.5m to build centres for learning the Quran in Wakrah, Dafna, the Old Airport area and Al Khor.
QR36 million has been expended on building some mosques and a further QR7.2 million on accommodation for imams.
QR6.7 million has been spent for mainetenance.QR3 million has been spent to build smaller mosques.
For 2006-2007, the Authority has drawn up plans to demolish some mosques and build new ones in their stead. Mosque-building also includes libraries, halls and beautification of the surroundings.
Among new mosques completed by Ashghal is the Omar bin Khattab Mosque in Madinat Khalifa which can accommodate 3,000 devotees.
The Abu Wakar Al Siddiq Mosque in Umm Ghuwailina can hold 2,000 devotees, the Othman bin Affan Mosque in Al Khor (3,000), Shiukh Mosque in Jasra (2,000), Abu Obeida Mosque in Umm Salata (2,000) and the Salaheddin Mosque in Mesaieed which can hold 1,500 devotees.
A total of QR50m has been spent on construction of the mosques, according to Ashghal.
