The municipal council of Bahraz sub-district in Diyala province, northeast of Baghdad revealed a plan to protect the elements of the Awakening forces and their families from insurgent's attacks.

Adnan Al-Khshali, The Head of the municipal council told "Shafaq News", that the municipality held a coordinated joint security meeting of the Awakning forces and the military leaders in the sub-district to prepare a plan to ensure protecting the Awakening forces from being targeted ".

He explained that the sub-district demanded to set joint security points between the army and the Awakening forces in the sub-district areas which are active sometimes with the spread of armed cells affiliated to al- Qaeda and not to leave the Awakening forces work alone without assigning security support for them and that make them easy targets for armed attacks.

"Arming the Awakening forces is not in the required level that enables them to confront the militants," he added.

Armed attacks and assassinations operations have escalated against the Awakening forces recently.

The Awakening forces are popular forces that were founded in Anbar, west of Baghdad, in cooperation with the American forces to fight al-Qaeda in Iraq.

Iraq has been witnessed an increase in violence since the withdrawal of the American troops at end of 2011 while some fear from the return to the situation to what it was in days of sectarian fighting in 2006 that killed hundreds of thousands of citizens .
