TEHRAN (PIN) -- A contract for building polystyrene plant of Pars Petrochemical Company worth over 147 million euros was signed at National Petrochemical Company today.

According to the contract, the British Sembcorp Simon Carves Ltd as well as Iran's' Energy Industries Design and Engineering Company will implement the project.

The project will be implemented as EPCC and the contactor is responsible for basic and detailed engineering, procumbent of equipment and machinery, installation and construction as well as pre-commissioning and commissioning.

The polystyrene plant will consist of two ordinary and resistant polystyrene production lines with annual capacity of 100,000 tons as well as an expansive polystyrene production line with annual capacity of 50,000 tons, which makes it one of the biggest polystyrene plants in the world.

The plant will consume 250,000 tons styrene monomer per year as feed to be supplied by Pars Petrochemical Company while needed water, electricity and steam will be provided by Mobin utilities.

The project will be implemented in 36 months.

A polystyrene unit is up to the latest technical standards, the company chief says.

Dariush Riahifar, managing-director of the Pars Petrochemical Company, told PIN that focus is being made on East Asian markets like those in China and Japan.

The UK unit of the SembCorp Industries Ltd., a Singapore marine engineering and utilities conglomerate has received contracts to design and construct two petrochemical facilities in Iran worth more than S$345 million in total.

Riahifar said 50 percent of the products are destined for exports and the rest for domestic consumption.

Amir Kabir Petrochemical Co. awarded a consortium that includes SembCorp Simon-Carves Ltd. a contract to build a 300,000 metric tons/year Basell process low-density polyethylene plant at Bandar Imam in Iran.

Amir Kabir is a unit of Iran's state-owned National Petrochemical Co. SembCorp Simon-Carves' partners in the consortium include South Korea's Daelim Industrial Co. (000210.SE) and Iran's Namvaran Consulting Engineers.

SembCorp said its unit, in a consortium with Iran's Energy Industries Engineering & Design, also received a contract from Pars Petrochemical Co., another National Petrochemical Co. subsidiary, to build a 250,000 metric ton/year polystyrene plant in Assaluyeh, also in Iran.

The value of the UK unit's portion of work for each of the two projects is EUR80 million, the Singapore company said. Both projects are scheduled for completion in 2007.
