Dubai E-Vision is currently reviewing the possible options to introduce 3D channels in the UAE at the earliest in order to continue with the trend to be the "first to launch new services" such the HD service in the region, said a top official.
"The E-Vision network is adaptable to offering 3D service. The 3D service on TV is currently being tested by several operators globally such as the ESPN and BSkyB which are carrying out field tests during the next season of the Premier League and FIFA World Cup 2010 South Africa. We are keeping a close watch on international trends and also reviewing the current programming options," Humaid Rashid Sahoo, CEO, told Gulf News last week.
Demand
He said, "We anticipate good demand mainly due to the initial curiosity as the population in the UAE is very tech-savvy."
"Many pay-TV operators will use half-resolution 3D as a stepping stone and learning opportunity for full HD 3D in the future, but pricing is a major barrier," Abraham, Principal Analyst for In-Stat's Digital Entertainment Group, said in an e-mail interview to Gulf News.
According to research firm DisplaySearch, global 3D-ready TV shipments are forecast to grow to over 1.2 million in 2010.
