MUSCAT -- Oman Telecommunications Company (Omantel) has participated in a two-day Geographical Information System (GIS) forum organised by the geographic faculty of arts and social sciences in SQU which concluded yesterday. Khalid bin Sulaiman al Nabhani, Manager of System Support Unit at Omantel, displayed the GIS used in the company. It included the system of converting traditional papers to electronic digital system through the use of modern techniques. Al Nabhani also reviewed the uses of GIS in the telecommunications field, landlines, telephone exchanges and the distance of the telephone exchanges from the subscribers and other users.

He also explained the aims of the GIS, link the information technology to different geographical phenomena especially in terms of collection, analysis and data processing. The GIS is one of the necessary systems used in GIS, spatial and geographical reference to represent the database and information. Omantel also participated in an accompanying exhibition and its stall has showcased GIS used in the Sultanate with modern techniques, in addition to Internet Hi-Speed (ADSL) strategy and three packages which include home, business, and schools and charitable institutions.
