MUSCAT -- Oman Telecommunications Company (Omantel) yesterday launched wireless Internet service for postpaid Internet customers known as Postpaid Wi-Fi. This is an entirely new service through which ADSL and Dial-up subscribers can surf the Internet wirelessly in 20 hotspots all over the Muscat Governorate. The service enables ADSL and Dial-up subscribers to use their own username and password to surf wireless Internet (Wi-Fi) without purchasing the prepaid Wi-Fi cards and they will be billed monthly on the basis of their usage.

Addressing a press conference, Saleh bin Abdullah al Farsi, Division Head Marketing and Customer Service at Omantel, said that the current ADSL and Dial-up subscribers could avail the new service through filling the necessary forms at the customer service counters in Muscat or through visiting Omantel Website (www.omantel.net.om). Meanwhile, new subscribers can choose this service when they fill the ADSL or Dial-up forms at the time of applying for Internet service.

Al Farsi added that providing this service is part of the company's eagerness to expand the use of Internet and enhance Wi-Fi subscribers and users to include all types of Internet... be it Dial-up or ADSL. This new service also aims at providing an alternative payment for Wi-Fi users. Referring to the growth of Internet users, Al Farsi said Omantel has 60,000 postpaid and 20,000 prepaid Internet subscribers now. Omantel launched Wi-Fi service in March, 2006.

It has placed more than 20 hotspots in the busy locations in Muscat -- Al Harthy Commercial Complex, Madinat Sultan Qaboos Commercial Center, the Capital Commercial Center, Al Araimi Commercial Center, Sabco Commercial Center, Zakher Mall, Al Bustan Palace Hotel, Jawharat al Shatti Complex, Oman International Exhibitions Center, the Knowledge Oasis Muscat, Kargeen Caf at Madinat Sultan Qaboos, Al Waha Center in Shati Al-Qurum, and some other locations.
