MUSCAT — “Oman and Malaysia share the same vision in terms of moving forward towards knowledge economy,” said Datto Haji Amrim bin Buang, secretary-general of Malaysia’s Ministry of Higher Education.

Datto Amrin was visiting Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) yesterday accompanied by a 15-member Malaysian delegation.

Dr Hamad bin Suleiman Al Salmi, vice-president of SQU, received the delegation on its arrival.

They discussed ways of promoting bilateral cooperation in academic fields. The two sides also reviewed the possibility of exchange of expertise, academic staff, researchers and students and to offer mutual scholarships.

Amrin visited the SQU main library where he was briefed on its various sections and the services it offered to students.

The guest also visited the Education Technology Centre at the SQU. The members of the delegation were very impressed with the infrastructure and facilities. The delegation comprises Dr Ghauth Lasmon, president/CEO of Multimedia University; Zainudin bin Dolah, director of education promotion department; Azhar Mohammed Salleh, head of international unit in the Ministry of Education, and senior representatives from prominent universities of Malaysia.

Amrin also held talks with His Highness (Dr) Sayyid Fahad bin Julanda Al Said, assistant vice-president for administration and finance, and other senior officials on topics ranging from higher education collaborations and exchange visits. In an interview, Datto Amrin said: “We would like to establish broad-based cooperation both at the government and institutional level in the field of education. We are looking into the possibility of an MoU that would facilitate exchange of faculty, students and researches and provision of scholarships. Another area of cooperation could be in exchanging information and processing of accreditation between Oman educational authorities and the Accreditation Board of Malaysia.”
