MUSCAT -- All thirty-three finalists of the Oman Today Restaurant Awards 2006 were announced at a special press meet held at Shangri-La's Barr Al Jissah Resort and Spa, Qantab, yesterday. The Oman Today Restaurant Awards is a highly popular annual event and this year's astounding number of 87,000 votes, cast by the dining public, signifies how popular it has become since the initial launching of the competition in 2002. The amazing feat is even more incredible considering the fact that this year's voting, which ended on September 15, was over a period of only two months, instead of the usual three.

A panel of judges will now take over and visit each of the finalists, selecting one winner from each one of the eleven categories. The identity of this panel is kept secret from the public, as well as from each other and their eventual decisions are to be made only after they have dined at these fine restaurants anonymously. The winners will be announced and honoured at a gala black-tie event scheduled for December 13 at Shangri-La's Barr al Jissah Resort and Spa.

This year's finalists are: Ambience -- Mumtaz Mahal, Shangri-La's Barr al Jissah Resort and Spa and The Chedi; Buffet -- Jean's Grill, Mokha Caf and Samba; Caf -- D'Arcy's Kitchen, Second Cup and Starbucks; Far Eastern -- China Mood, Golden Oryx and Silk Route; Fast Food -- KFC, McDonalds and Pizza Hut; Indian -- Kamat, Mumtaz Mahal and Woodlands; International -- Pavo Real, The Chedi and Trader Vic's; Italian -- O Sole Mio, Santino's Bistro Italiano and Tuscany; Middle Eastern -- Al Tanoor, Automatic and The Chedi; Public House Food -- Al Ghazal, Club Safari and Duke's Bar; and Service -- Shangri-La's Barr Al Jissah Resort and Spa; The Chedi and Woodlands.

Saleh al Zakwani, Publisher and Mohana Prabhakar, Managing Editor, of Oman Today, along with fellow executives, were on hand to answer press personnel's questions and queries. Mohana noted, the popularity of the event is partly due to people enjoying the dining-out experience here in Oman.
