MUSCAT -- As many as 526,469 male and female students went to schools in all governorates of the Sultanate yesterday marking the beginning of the new academic year 2014-2015. Male students accounted for 267,547 and 12,578 new students. This year there are 1,053 schools across the Sultanate. Students were seated in their classrooms according to the lists and received textbooks on the first day of the new school year. Earlier, the directorate generals of education in the governorates announced that they have completed their perpetrations for the new school year. The schools have been equipped with furniture and equipment to the tune of RO 7 million including computers, desks, laboratory equipment and educational supplies.
The Royal Oman Police (ROP) patrols were seen near schools vicinities to streamline traffic and make sure that school vehicles are running smoothly. Police also distributed brochures and booklets to students to raise their traffic safety awareness. Meanwhile, registration for the second sorting for the academic year 2014-2015 will begin tomorrow. Students will be able to apply for vacancies and the newly-introduced programmes at the higher education institutions starting from 8:00 am tomorrow until 12:30 noon on Monday September 8. Huda bint Saif al Harthiya, Director of Admission Department said that a number of opportunities are available in both vacant seats and new programmes.
There are 25 educational programmes 12 of them are in internal scholarships at the International College of Engineering which will provide specializations such as mechanical engineering, auto technology, electronics, communications, software Engineering. This is in addition to internal scholarships provided by the private sector, Al Harthiya said adding that the students who did not register at the e-admission system have a chance to apply for these programmes which will be announce later and the students who are already registered can apply for the vacancies regardless of whether or not they were given seats in the first sorting. Students can apply for up to 40 programme however they cannot reorder their previous optiomns.
