Following the launch, Wohaibi said the new GSM exchange would serve all towns and villages of the wilayats in the north of Sharqiyah region such as Ibra, Mudhaibi, Dima Wateen and Bidiya, taking up the total capacity in Sharqiyah to 300,000 lines. He recalled the opening of 200,000 lines Sur exchange before Eid Al Adha. The chairman of the Board of Directors of Oman Mobile Telecommunications Company further noted the launch of Ibra GSM exchange falls within the company’s plans to expand GSM coverage and further ease pressure and streamline the telecom services, a step started with the expansion projects launched before Eid Al Adha.

This step, he added, will pave the way for more GSM value-added services such as GPRS and MMS and others which the company intends to offer in the coming months.

Wohaibi lauded the efforts of all engineers, technicians and various employees who worked hard in implementing various projects ensuring better GSM coverage throughout the Sultanate.

Earlier this year, a hefty number of 650,000 lines were added to various exchanges in Muscat Governorate, Sharqiyah and Dakhiliah regions as well as putting in the service number of new booster stations in various towns and villages throughout the Sultanate. Dr Amer bin Awadh Al Rawas said Ibra GSM exchange in Sharqiyah region is the first fruit of the new company established recently, highlighting the importance of the new exchange in streamlining the telecom flow in towns and wilayats of north Sharqiyah region.

He said Ibra exchange envisages a new stage for more capacity expansion of exchanges aimed to better serve subscribers in the wilayats of Ibra, Al Mudhaibi, Dima Wateen and Bidiya in particular and Sahrqiyah region in general. Rawas added the new exchange would serve over 10,000 GSM subscribers in the wilayats of Wusta region and oilfield areas, 30,000 in the wilayats of north Sharqiyah region noting that all telecom traffic handled via 25 booster stations in Wusta region and 25 booster stations in Sharqiyah region will be converted to Ibra exchange instead of handling them through Ghala exchange in Muscat governorate and exchanges of the wilayats of Nizwa and Sur
