MUSCAT — Oman edged closer to realising the dream of reaching a full-fledged digital community that would include key services such as telemedicine and e-government as the Sultanate’s telecommunications provider launched an innovative service that has already created waves in the market.
MAXnet is the brand name of the revolutionary new ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) service the Oman Telecommunications Company (Omantel) launched yesterday.
MAXnet is a nationwide multi-service broadband platform which allows convergence of data, voice and video services.
The network will provide corporate customers with a selectable end-to-end absolute quality service for all of their connectivity requirements. As such, MAXnet deploys the latest state-of-the-art, carrier-class multi-service technology.
The new service was launched at a glittering ceremony held at the Grand Hyatt Hotel under the auspices of Juma bin Ali bin Juma, minister of manpower, in the presence of many ministers, undersecretaries and senior officials from both public and private sectors.
This exciting new service is part of Omantel’s quest to develop and bring in new technologies to the Sultanate and further expand its services and products portfolio.
Also yesterday, three banking giants — BankMuscat, National Bank Oman and Oman Arab Bank — signed a five-year agreement with Omantel to avail of the new service that mainly targets corporate organisations from both public and private sectors.
In his speech, Eng. Mahammed bin Ali Al Wohaibi, executive president of Omantel, noted that MAXnet is widely considered as one of the most sophisticated services in the telecommunications field worldwide.
He noted that the ATM launch was a pivotal step towards giving added momentum to the services sector, including health, banking and trade sectors.
It would also boost the role of both public and private sector establishments to play a significant role in the development of the Omani economy.
Wohaibi stressed that while Omantel managed to put in intensive efforts in expanding the telecom services throughout various regions and wilayats of the Sultanate, the company spared no efforts in keeping abreast with the on-going technological developments around the world.
Today, Omantel was entering an important transformational phase, seen as key stage of the company’s progress.
The transformation is from the public sector to the private sector, and it has various competitive implications, he noted.
“Omantel is moving from being just a basic telecom service provider to complete package solutions and value-added service provider with keen focus on quality and speed. It is Omantel’s keen intention to strike a full-fledged partnership with both public and private sector organisations and further enhance the productivity and efficiency level of the technological operations.”
The Omantel chief also indicated that the launch of MAXnet fell within the company’s strategy and aimed at bringing about a comprehensive reshuffle of the company’s services and products portfolio.
“This will help in launching a new generation of the complete services that enable the corporate community to handle their multiple types of network traffic easily, safely and in cost effective manner.”
Wohaibi stressed that MAXnet service was a revolutionary technology that would open up a world of possibilities for corporate customers and their networks that was not possible with today’s lease-line service adding the initiative, driven by market demand, is one of many steps taken by Omantel to build the telemedicine, e-government infrastructure and ultimately reaching the full-fledged digital community in a way that would further nudge the progress of the comprehensive development in the Sultanate.
Wohaibi concluded that Omantel would continue its quest to keep up with the latest global trends and bring the most useful applications that would contribute in promoting various areas, out of the company’s firm commitment to enhance the course of the Sultanate’s all-round progress under the wise leadership of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said. The ATM is a fast packet technology that uses short fixed-length packets called cells.
However, the MAXnet provides an end-to-end integrated network solution that can simultaneously handle multiple types of network traffic.
The ATM Broadband Solution provides Corporate Customers with the flexibility required to build any type of network solution (e.g. Virtual Private Networks, Virtual Lease Line, and Transparent LAN) and has ultimate scalability as it does not impose any speed limitations.
It is that flexibility that ATM Broadband Solution allows corporate customers to design their communication needs around the requirements of their businesses and their business applications. Building end-to-end integrated networks with an end-end selectable quality of service will become a commodity.
Meanwhile, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdullah Al Harthi, minister of transport and communications and chairman of Oman Telecommunications Company, told reporters that the MAXnet services would cater to the needs of various corporate organisations as the service is based on an advanced multi-service technology. The minister further noted that by launching such a sophisticated service, Omantel was opening new areas of the value-added telecom services in the Sultanate.
