SALALAH -- The workshop on MPLS technology and applications continued for the third day yesterday, attended by more than 50 participants. The workshop, organised jointly by Oman Telecommunications Company (Omantel) and the International Telecommuni-cations Union (ITU) and the Arab Centre of Excellence, focused the first and second days on the concept of MPLS system, its basic principles and how it works with other supporting technologies. The sessions revolved on the technical and technological aspects of the system as well as other operational and economic aspects in general and its role in improving the efficiency and quality of telecommunications network.

The workshop relies on practical applications and how an integrated network of telecommunications using MPLS technology works. The participants attended a presentation on the characteristics of the system, its benefits and uses. Other presentations discussed the future of telecommunications sector, and networks in light of the existence of the multi-benefits multi-purpose MPLS system. Director of the Arab Centre of Excellence of the International Telecommuni-cation Union, Ghulam al Bulushi, emphasised the importance of the system and the future services it will provide.

Al Bulushi indicated that the telecom sector is developing very fast. A range of new technologies is expected to emerge during the next three years, which includes W-Max system to provide large Internet capacities. It is an integrated network of telecommunication contacts over the Internet. Al Bulushi indicated that the Sultanate is making strides in the telecommunication sector. It competes with advanced countries to attract advanced networks. Oman is rated high in terms of advanced services such as the wireless Internet.

Al Balushi also spoke about the developments that have taken place in the Sultanate with the privatisation of telecommunication sector, which led to a marked improvement in the quality of services. He said that the Sultanate's telecom sector witnessed qualitative and quantitative development after privatisation.
