MUSCAT -- Oman Gas Company has completed a project to supply the new Mirbat power and water desalination station at Mirbat in the Dhofar region. OGC has invested around RO 25 million to lay the 40km pipeline extension and build a gas supply station for the new electrical power plant.
When the plant goes into operation shortly, OGC will be supplying some 3.2 million standard cubic metres of gas every day through the new 24-inch pipeline, allowing the plant to provide an extended supply of electricity to people across Dhofar.
The natural gas supply also feeds Oman's fastest-growing industrial areas such as Sohar and Salalah, by providing the raw materials for petrochemical plants like Salalah Methanol, or a power source for new industries such as the steel and aluminium facilities in Sohar.
OGC Regional Manager for Salalah, Mohammed al Barami (pictured), explained the importance of this major investment in the region: "By providing this fuel to a new power generation facility at Mirbat, we are helping directly to facilitate development in Dhofar.
The new power station will increase the overall electricity supply to the Dhofar region by over 50 per cent. We are currently supplying gas to Salalah Methanol, Dhofar Power Company, Raysut Cement, OCTAL and Raysut Industrial Estate."
The project to lay the pipeline and build associated facilities took two years, but has been completed well ahead of schedule to ensure that the Mirbat Power Plant has a supply ready and waiting for the first day of operation.
Al Barami praised the role of the local community in ensuring a successful project: "People need to know that projects like these will benefit them directly.
The local people along the pipeline route have been very supportive, and we have tried to ensure that works both ways. We and our contractors employed around two hundred local people for the duration of the project. But everyone understands that making this investment in the future of Dhofar is important to the future for all of us. I would like to thank the people of this area for helping us achieve what we set out to do."
Oman Gas Company has a series of on-going projects across the Sultanate, including a major new supply planned for the Duqm development. Over 35 separate customers comprising major businesses and public utilities are currently supplied by the Company.
