Muscat:  Protecting underground water and coastal zones from pollution were some of the issues highlighted at the fourth annual three-day Gulf Eco exhibition, which opened on Tuesday at the Oman International Exhibition Centre.

The official environment exhibition is organised by the Oman International Trade and Exhibitions (OITE) with the patronage of the Ministry of Environment and Climatic Affairs. The event focuses on the core areas of environment, water, municipal services and technology, environ-energy and the agricultural sector in the country.

"New challenges confronting Oman's environment and our policies to tackle them are highlighted during the exhibition," Yahya Ali Al Salmani, spokesman for the Ministry of Environment and Climatic Affairs, told Gulf News.

He said a day-long seminar yesterday will discuss sustainable development on environmental issues.

Technology support

Motasam Al Shibani, spokesperson of OITE, said the issues to be taken up include monitoring and determining water well protection zones and environmental pollution incidents, protecting underground water and coastal zones from pollution and controlling pollution.

"The latest technology in the conservation of our natural resources is showcased at the exhibition," he said. The exhibition, Al Shibani said, also covers a range of environmental products and services targeted at architects, designers, contractors, energy personnel, industrialists, HSE managers, publications, fleet managers, water and desalination and environmental experts and practitioners.

"With a wide variety of companies dealing with every aspect of environment conservation, Gulf Eco would be an ideal platform for business networking, brainstorming, forming liaisons and interaction with influential officials and end users of environment related services and products," said Al Shibani.

With such matters of general concern on the agenda, Gulf Eco would certainly be an informative and enlightening event for visitors and participants alike, said the OITE representative.
