MUSCAT -- The newly formed Animal Rescue Centre (ARC) managed to raise RO 2,590 towards the establishment of a much needed animal rescue centre to be based in Barka, at a quiz night fundraiser held at the Dolphin Club, Bousher, on Wednesday. Over 200 people turned up to contribute for this worthy cause, aimed at providing animal welfare and controlling the increasingly high number of stray cats and dogs. This growing problem is a result of domestic cats and dogs being left out to fend for themselves when their guardians leave the country or go on holiday.
The proposed centre will go a long way in alleviating this problem which if left unchecked can become a serious menace. Unwanted strays are prone to suffer from lack of food and shelter and can become disease ridden without proper veterinary care. The animals can become a public nuisance and present serious public health concerns, as most of them are not vaccinated nor neutered. In addition to this, they can also adversely affect the indigenous wildlife of Oman through interbreeding with native cats and wolves and spreading diseases such as rabies and leptospirosis.
This is why concerned group of animal welfare supporters, which includes ARC Chairman, Colonel Suleiman al Busaidy; Vice Chairperson, Christine Harrison; Secretary, Laura Grey; Treasurer, Paula Waters; Vets Louise Waters and Peter Golling, Ministry adviser, Dr Barry Jupp and members, Ligaya Jupp and Paola al Khonji are devoting their time and effort for this noble cause.
Besides the 'quiz competition', there was also an auction and raffle featuring donated prizes from Oman Air, Oman Marketing, Shangri La Barr Al Jissah Resort and Spa, Julie al Busadi, Harley Davidson, Muscat Diving and Adventure Centre, Al Sawadi Beach Resort, Blue Marlin Restaurant, Johnson al Shaali, Crowne Plaza, Oman Sheraton, African Artifacts, Raddisson SAS, Grand Hyatt, Chedi Hotel, Marks and Spencers, and Ayna Spa.
