Qatar National Hotels Company said yesterday that it has taken ownership of the Raffles Hotel in Singapore, but alcohol restrictions remain in place back in the Qatari capital

A Qatar-owned company has bought the home of the Singapore Sling - but back in Doha alcohol remains hard to come by at one of the country's flagship developments.

Qatar National Hotels Company said yesterday that it has taken ownership of the Raffles Hotel in Singapore - birthplace of the famous cocktail.

However, back in Qatar, restaurants and bars on The Pearl - a high-profile offshore development boasting luxury retailers and dining - have complained that a ban on serving alcohol introduced last month has had a drastic effect on their revenue. Now the president and managing director of United Development Company, the developer behind The Pearl-Qatar, has added to the uncertainty by announcing his resignation.

News of Khalil Sholy's departure comes just days after Arabian Business reported that some restaurants on the project were reporting their income was down 50 per cent since the ban.
