A Casablanca appellate court on Tuesday (December 29th) upheld the four-year suspended prison sentences and fines for Akhbar Al Youm editor Taoufik Bouachrine and cartoonist Khalid Gueddar, AFP reported. Bouachrine and Gueddar were convicted last October of failing to show proper respect for a member of the royal family. Their newspaper was also shut down.

In related news, the same court announced that it would decide an appeal from two Al Massae journalists on January 5th. Editor Rachid Nini received a 3-month jail term and writer Said Laajal got a two-month sentence last month for reporting that during an interrogation, the alleged head of a drug trafficking network had discussed the involvement of a judicial official.
