Tehran - An official at Iran Airports Company said efforts are underway to develop direct and parallel air routes over the airspace of the country with the cooperation of the Armed Forced.

Ebrahim Shushtari, the company's Aviation Operations Deputy, pointed to the unique geographical position as well as sustainable security in the aviation operation field in the Iranian airspace and said given the unpleasant incidents over the airspace of Ukraine and also insecurity over Iraq's airspace, ICAO has announced Iran's airspace the safest in the region.

Referring to ICAO's call on Iran to accept flights, he said fortunately with the approval of managers of the aviation industry these flights are passing through the Iranian airspace safely.

He added: 'At present we are witnessing a hundred percent increase in transit of flights through our airspace to such an extent that every 24 hours over 900 flights cross our country's airspace. The figure was 490 in the past."

He further remarked that other efforts in this respect include development of direct and parallel routes for these flights and to this end negotiations are underway with the Armed Forces for developing the routes in a near future.

He said now that Iran has opened its airspace to all airlines, it is expected that countries which are using the airspace will cooperate with Iran in meeting its demand for needed equipment.
