Dubai: Boxing great Michael Moorer has blamed the public and media for their role in bringing out the worst in the "self-destructive" Mike Tyson.
Tyson's career has been punctuated by controversies. From the alleged rape to biting off a piece of Evander Holyfield's ear during a world championship bout, Tyson has often managed to be in the news for all the wrong reasons.
But Moorer, a former light heavyweight and heavyweight world champion, is sympathetic towards Tyson despite never having fought him during his nearly two-decade long career.
Moorer takes on American compatriot Shelby 'The Bonetown Brawler' Gross in the headline act of the first Global Impact Boxing Championship card, which also sees local hero Eisa Al Dah stepping into the ring at the Dubai World Trade Centre on February 8.
"Tyson, somehow, has always been in the public eye because people have run him to the ground most of the time."
"It so happens that people tend to remember everything they read in the newspapers and see on TV. Whatever has been said about him in the press has most often been negative, so it's hard to imagine Tyson doing something good.
"Even if he has done something good it will not be there because, unfortunately, negativity sells."
