Doha: In the latest addition to its list of achievements, the National Command Centre of the Ministry of Interior has won the Excellence Award in Geographic Information System (GIS) from the American Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) for its Najam security system. 

This award is given in recognition of outstanding achievements and applications in the field of geographic information technology all over the world. According to ESRI, Najm Security System won the award beating more than 100,000 establishments and other organisations from all over the world. 

The Institute, based in California, is the first point of reference in the world for issuance of the global standard for e-maps, followed globally in all areas of GIS applications. 

The applications and programmes of ESRI are used by over 300,000 establishments all over the world. 

The prize will be awarded at an international conference of ESRI system users, which is scheduled to be held from July 8 to 12 in Santiago.

This is not the first time the MoI has won an award for its Najm security system. It had won an award for the best advanced security application for the Najam security system in the Middle East Geospatial Forum 2012 conference and exhibition. 

The forum was held by the GIS Centre under the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Urban Planning and was attended by officials from ministries, leading companies and local and regional organisations in the field of communication and information technology in the Middle East.

Najm security system is one of the main systems of the MoI which connects the departments of the Ministry of Interior concerned with safety and security, Internal Security Force (Lekhwiya) and the ambulance service of Hamad Medical corporation. 

It is also one of the latest security projects of the MoI. Najam accelerates delivery of information from the Central Operations Department to the patrol teams in different locations in the country while choosing the patrolling team nearest to the site of an incident.
