Dubai Al Wasl Hospital has been renamed Latifa Hospital in memory of Shaikha Latifa Bint Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the late mother of His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

The announcement comes a few days after Shaikh Mohammad posted recollections of his mother and her influence on his life on his Twitter account.

Shaikha Latifa was renowned for her generosity and kindness towards the needy and orphans. She played a pioneering role in encouraging Emirati women in Dubai to get an education, stemming from her belief in the important role a woman plays in society.

Positive response

The directive is in line with Shaikh Mohammad’s announcement to honour mothers on the sixth anniversary of his accession, which received positive reactions on his Facebook page and Twitter account.

Also yesterday, Shaikh Mohammad awarded Her Highness Shaikha Fatima Bint Mubarak, Chairwoman of the General Women’s Union and wife of Shaikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, with the Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Honorary Sash.

“I am pleased to award the Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Honorary Sash to Shaikha Fatima Bint Mubarak, Mother of the Emirates,” Shaikh Mohammad said in his address.

The award was part of celebrations of Shaikh Mohammad’s sixth accession anniversary which focused on mothers this year, reflecting the importance of family values in UAE society.

Shaikh Mohammad’s surprise visit to ‘ideal’ Emirati mothers on the occasion of his sixth accession anniversary will serve as encouragement to women across the UAE, particularly those who are raising their children amid difficulties, Indian expatriate Gulshan Kavanrana, who runs the Special Family Support (SFS) group, told Gulf News. Kavanrana has a 14-year-old daughter with special needs.
