RIYADH: Etihad Etisalat (Mobily) has been selected to get 'Excellence' award in geographic information systems (GIS) application by Esri, an American company specialized in digital GIS.

The award comes in recognition of achieving GIS applications for optical fiber communications network across Saudi Arabia.

Khalid Al-Moammar, chief executive for operations at Mobily, received the award from Abdulaziz Al-Tammamy, president of Saudi Arabia's Esri dealer Information Systems company, on behalf of Esri, after visiting him at his office in Riyadh.

Digital Geographic Maps System or GIS application is one of the most important tools of communication through optical fiber cables for both voice calls and data transfer in Saudi Arabia. The great importance of this system will emerge upon starting of construction projects and maintenance of underground paths both for telecoms, electricity, water and other public utilities to avoid disrupting any vital service to other service sectors.

Commenting on the award, Al-Tammamy said: "We strive to always apply world's latest technologies in all areas of communications to maintain the best level in providing services. This award reflects Mobily's keenness to apply modern technology in completing its projects in cooperation with other related organizations."

Esri presents this award for the first time for the telecom sector in Saudi Arabia. Although many other companies around the world provide this system, Mobily said it chose to deal with Esri for the supply of this advanced system, as it is the leading company in the area of this technology.
