BEIRUT: IFC, a member of the World Bank Group, and the Lebanese Justice Ministry are working together to create a court-referred mediation program in Lebanon to help resolve commercial disputes efficiently and amicably, supporting economic growth.

IFC’s office in Beirut played host to a meeting of 14 senior judges, who discussed the details of the planned program and agreed on three pilot projects.

The main business hubs in the country, Beirut and Mount Lebanon, as well as Tripoli, will see new commercial court cases put forward for mediation, which is expected to dramatically reduce the burden on the courts, saving time and money for businesses and their customers.

“Mediation can make a valuable contribution to Lebanese business,” said Maysam Noueiri, president of the Beirut commercial appeals chamber and interim first president of the Beirut appeals court.
