DOHA: The Minister of Education and Higher Education and Secretary General of the Supreme Education Council HE Saad bin Ibrahim Al Mahmoud inaugurated the new building of primary school at the Doha Academy in Mauritius.
The minister represented the Emir H H Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, who donated $1m for the construction of new premises. Qatar’s ambassador to Mauritius H E Ali bin Abdulla Zaid Al Mahmoud, Mauritius Deputy Prime Minister Dr Ahmed Rashid Beebeejaun, Mauritius Foreign Affair Minister Arvin Boolell, Education Minister Vasant Kumar Bunwaree and ICT Minister Mohammed Asraf Ally Dulull were present on the occasion.
Saad bin Ibrahim Al Mahmoud spoke on the importance of education and consolidating existing friendly relations.
“Qatar through strengthening its relation with Mauritius tend to assist the establishment of this great educational institution for the benefit of the Republic and to spread knowledge”, Al Mahmoud said.
Ihsan Hossenbaccus, Chairperson of the Doha Academy said it is a proud moment that the school is getting momentum and heartly thanked the Emir of Qatar for his continuous help.
“The Heir Apparent H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani laid the foundation stone for the project in January 2002 and we started with 150 students in 2003, and today we have 800 students coming from all over the Island”, Hossenbaccus said.
The project includes the Doha Secondary School, divided into boys and girls sections which was inaugurated in 2003 and a primary school built in 2005.
The Doha Academy also launched a BA Honours Degree in Arabic in 2007 and a Hons Degree in Islamic Studies last year.
