RABAT, Jan 22, 2007 (AFP) - Moroccan telephone operator Maroc Telecom reported an excellent year in 2006, with consolidated turnover of 22.61 billion dirhams (2.06 billion euros), 10.1 percent up on 2005.

"On all our activities the market has reacted favourably to our innovative offers, so that the growth in revenue has once again exceeded our expectations," board chairman Abdeslam Ahizoune said in a statement.

The figures reflected a switch from traditional fixed lines to broadband connections through the Internet and mobile telephones.

The number of fixed lines fell 5.6 percent to 1.27 million lines, while broadband connections rose 59 percent to 384,000.

Mobile phone turnover increased by 15 percent to 14.68 billion dirhams (1.33 billion euros), Maroc Telecom said. The number of subscribers soared 30 percent to 10.71 million.

Maroc Telecom, 51 percent owned France's Vivendi Universal, is one of the three major operators in Morocco, along with Medi Telecom and Wana.
