Mannai Heavy Equipment, a division of Mannai Corporation, finds immense potential for compact heavy equipment in the construction sector due to lack of working space.

"There is a growing need in construction to optimise functionality and productivity in tight spaces. This calls for the addition of more compact heavy equipment which has become a popular tool particularly as a project comes close to completion, when it can be difficult squeezing larger machines around structures," Mannai Trading Heavy Equipment Division general manager Khalid Yousef said.

He was speaking on the sidelines of an industry gathering hosted by the company and JCB where it launched four new models of JCB heavy equipment. Mannai Heavy Equipment launched the latest models of JCB's skid steer loader 135 and mini excavator 8030 ZTS, along with new models of the wheeled loading shovel 467ZX, back hoe loader 1CX.

The construction sector in Qatar is highly competitive and as partners to construction companies in delivering world-class heavy equipment and continuing after sales support, "we are seeing a trend" towards amplifying the range of existing heavy equipment with more flexible solutions that can reach tighter spaces and perform to the same high standards, Yousef said.

Smaller heavy machines are actually used a lot in construction, he said, adding they require the same operating skills as their larger counterparts such as excavators, wheeled shovels, backhoes and loaders which perform all the heavy work in the preliminary stages.

However, as a project draws close to completion, more compact and manoeuvrable equipment such as skid steer loaders and mini excavators are important - they can fit down standard alleys and can actually complete a lot of work in a short space of time, he said. Skid steer loaders are used extensively in road works.
