Abu Dhabi: An Asian man in his 60s died when his car burst into flames on Al Muroor Road near the Police College on Thursday, Abu Dhabi Police said.

Al Qubaisat Civil Defence doused the flames to stop it from spreading to nearby areas. Specialised teams were instructed to determine the cause of the fire.

“The Civil Defence General Headquarters in Abu Dhabi has taken several preventive measures for such incidents. These comprise awareness programmes and campaigns targeting school students, public and private institutions and their employees,” First Lieutenant Abdullah Hamad Al Tamimi, head of the customer service centre at the General Directorate of Civil Defence in Abu Dhabi, said.

Al Tamimi urged motorists to change oil in their vehicle regularly and ensure that a sufficient amount of water is added to the radiator. Heavy vehicle drivers are also urged to stay within the load limit and to refrain from driving long distances without taking breaks.

“Drivers should also conduct regular check-ups, avoid smoking in their vehicles and never leave their children unsupervised in cars,” Al Tamimi added.

Fire extinguishers

Finally, installing fire extinguishers in vehicles is also essential, the official said.

Fire safety experts told Gulf News that using genuine parts, especially wires and cables, when performing car maintenance is key, especially during the summer when vehicles tend to overheat.

Ensuring that fire extinguishers are high quality can make a big difference regarding their functionality, Khalid Al Khateeb, CEO of the National Fire Fighting Company, said earlier.

A similar incident happened recently when a man was burnt to death in a moving vehicle. The minibus burst into flames while passing through an unpaved area near Al Samha on the Abu Dhabi-Dubai highway.
