Citizens from East and West Riffa who applied for social housing between 1993 and 1996 are to finally receive their new dream homes, chairman of the Southern Municipal Council revealed yesterday.
Ali bin Khaleel Al Muhannadi, Chairman of the Southern Municipal Council, told Bahrain Tribune yesterday that at least 212 houses are expected to soon be built in East Riffa and West Riffa.
"The Minister of Housing Shaikh Ibrahim bin Khalifa Al Khalifa told me at a meeting I had with him that he was waiting for the contract documents to start building," Al Muhannadi stated.
The housing project is expected to be built on 150,000 square metres of land. It is to include new parks and substations, in addition to the residential areas.
However, the chairman stated that despite having completed the plans for the project, the land in question is yet to be transferred to the Ministry of Housing and is still in the hands of the Ministry of Municipalities and Agricultural Affairs.
Al Muhannadi added that according to the Ministry of Municipalities, the land is being surveyed and once this is done it will be handed over to the Ministry of Housing.
The chairman expressed hope that the project will be completed as soon as possible since, according to him, no housing projects have been undertaken in East or West Riffa in 30 years.
"It is high time the applications from these two areas received priority," he told the Tribune.
