Consumer electronics major LG prepares to get aggressive in the smart phone product category as the company plans to launch a range of new models in the second half of 2010 in the UAE.

Currently, the company has just two smart phones in the market based on Google's and Microsoft platform. In the GSM (global system for moblile communications) mobile business, LG has 25 models currently in the market.

In terms of market share globally, LG holds only five per cent in the smart phone segment and 30 per cent in the mobile category. HS Paik, President at LG Electronics Gulf, told Emirates Business on the sidelines of its 3D LED TV launch in Dubai yesterday: "Globally in the CDMA (code division multiple access) category, LG holds number one position. It occupies third place in the GSM mobile segment. The penetration of smart phones in the Middle East and Africa is still small at five per cent. Therefore, the game is just beginning which is why in the second half of 2010, there will be an increased line-up of smart phones in the region from LG." The company has no plans to launch its own smartphone platform to follow close competitor Samsung's launch of the 'Bada' platform.

"It's not possible for a company to do everything as that is a bit dangerous. There are limitations on investing in new technologies and products. When there are companies developing specialised operating systems for the smart phone, there is no need to venture into that category," said Paik.

For LG, TVs will continue to be a growth driver in 2010. It launched its first LED range of 3D TVs yesterday along with 3D products mainly including blu ray player, projectors and game consoles. "Consumer confidence is back in the region and is more than even 2008 levels for LG. Confidence has risen with consumer electronic sales bouncing back both in cheaper and premium product lines," said Paik.

"The positive situation will continue this year unless the financial situations globally like in Greece affects the Middle East market."
