CARTHAGE (TAP) - Interim Prime Minister Ali Larayedh said, Thursday afternoon, he had handed his government's resignation to Caretaker President Moncef Marzouki.

"We have thus met our previous commitment, now that there is visibility and that we are confident in the country's future," he told reporters after meeting with the President of the Republic at Carthage Palace.

This resignation takes place as the transition period has reached an advanced stage, on the eve of the adoption of the new constitution and the completion of the election of members of the Higher Independent Authority for Elections.

Larayedh also pointed to the consensus reached on the formation of a neutral government to be tasked with preparing for the next elections.

He also said that after his resignation, the President of the Republic will officially task Prime Minister-designate Mehdi Jomaa with forming the new government.

"The country is ushering in a new stage to be marked by preparations for elections but should also find common denominators between Tunisians to avoid infighting," he indicated.

Larayedh also said the President of the Republic had asked him to continue running the country's affairs, adding under the law, the resigning government keeps the same powers until a new government is formed and wins the National Constituent Assembly (NCA) confidence vote.
