KUWAIT, March 1 (KUNA) -- If you have ever thought that the dishdasha, Kuwaiti men's traditional garb, is just a plain long white robe, think again. As simple and as plain the dishdashas might appear to the naked eye, each piece can be unique in its qualities and appearance upon closer inspection.
With the end of winter approaching, Kuwaiti men are preparing themselves to greet the summer season with new dishdashas and are buying and getting tailor made pieces without any delay.
Owner of a men's fabrics store Mr. Nabeel Taki told KUNA a Kuwaiti man is very stylish and elegant and likes to take care of his appearance by choosing the best quality fabrics.
Taki pointed out there are two kinds of summer fabrics. The first is made of pure cotton and the second is a mixture of cotton and polyester. He added that Kuwaiti men like to purchase the latter because it looks very good and does not wrinkle very fast.
Answering a question about the preferred colors, Taki said that unlike the Kuwaiti men in the 80s who were bolder with colors and patterns of their dishdashas, the Kuwaiti men nowadays are 'timid' and they always try to avoid drawing too much attention to themselves. Therefore, they go for beige colors with slight touches of different shades of green or gray and the like, he said.
Taki named the current period as the "Buhari" season which is a transitional period from winter to summer. He said that Kuwaiti men like to wear dark colors yet light weight dishdashas during this season.
Taki remarked on the slight difference between the dishdasha in Kuwait and in other countries of the Gulf region. He stated that in the UAE and Oman men tend to choose heavy fabrics for their dishdashas while Kuwaitis like lighter ones.
