CAIRO, Jan 26 (KUNA) -- Kuwait has always been and will continue to be a strong supporter of Arab culture and literature, Assistant Secretary-General of the National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters Abdel-Hadi Al-Ajmi said Saturday.
Al-Ajmi, who headed the Kuwaiti delegation to the 40th International Book Fair, which kicked off in an open air space with a large number of Arab, Egyptian and Kuwaiti writers and members of the press taking part.
"His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah is the ultimate supporters of culture and arts in Kuwait," Al-Ajmi said and recalled how the council was created through an Amiri decree dating back to 1973. This showed an awareness of the importance of arts and literature on the part of the political leadership, Al-Ajmi said.
He cited the example of the Al-Arabi magazine to illustrate the "growing importance of Arab literature in Kuwait."
He also recalled that, in 2001, Kuwait was chosen as Arab Cultural Capital.
He added that the Kuwaiti wing at the book fair consisted of two parts, one containing publications by the council at competitive prices and the other publications by other expert sides.
