KUWAIT: Mubarak Al-Harbi, the head of the national campaign against price rises, has urged the government to speedily adopt the necessary price control measures to counter price rises and inflation. Al-Harbi has also proposed the introduction of legislation to counter the phenomenon of price increases, reported Al-Qabas. Al-Harbi said that Cooperative Societies would adopt practical steps to control prices in the near future, especially after the government exempted them from paying a 30 percent tax surcharge on products' value.

This saving, he said, would be used by them in bringing the price of goods down. Al-Harbi emphasized that the Co-ops can't tackle price rises on their own, reiterating that the government must introduce price-control legislation.

Absent students
KUWAIT: 85% of students at a local state school were absent from classes on Sunday, despite tests scheduled for that day. This occurred despite the Ministry of Education's (MoE) threats to penalize absent pupils in an attempt to curb pupil absenteeism at various public schools. The problem is worst on days immediately before and after official holidays. A Ministry of Education (MoE) official said that the ministry had been monitoring both pupils' and teachers' school attendance in preparation for penalizin
g those who are absent without adequate justification. "Allowing students to stay home reflects parents' lack of awareness of the importance of attending school, particularly during the period approaching the final term examinations," said the ministry official, adding, "School curricula are planned in accordance with a certain schedule that cannot be disregarded and such repeated absences negatively affect students learning and helps them to become irresponsible adolescents.

Tent removal suspended
KUWAIT: A number of prominent individuals, including MPs and municipal council members have reportedly used their influence to have the order to remove tents pitched in residential areas suspended. A source close to the team entrusted with removing violations erected on state property told local daily Al-Rai that a number of important figures had managed to extend the grace period for the removal of tents in residential areas until next Sunday.

The insider said that all the teams were ready to perform their duties and remove the tents when a directive was circulated to team members ordering the suspension of the dismantling process. Instead, said the memo, those people with tents erected in residential areas should be warned about the need to take their tents down before next Sunday and urged to dismantle the tents themselves.

Committee secretary Engineer Abdulkarim Al-Zaid said that the members had discussed the eight-part strategy, which covers eight issues, the most important of which are the BOT projects and working mechanisms. The draft will now be presented to the Supreme Council for Planning.
