KUWAIT: The economic and legal committees from different ministries convened on Tuesday and arrived at the conclusion that the economic stimulus law will be passed shortly, with slight amendments suggested by MPs. Meanwhile, officials said that once candidates register their names to run for the upcoming elections, the Ministry of Interior would then start disqualifying those who hold dual citizenships, reported Al-Rai. With regard to preparations being made for elections, what officials describe as the 'election road map,' the picture is still unclear in some districts, especially in the second.
By declaring his intention to run for elections in the second constituency, Adnan Al-Mutawa has misled Shiite blocs. They were planning to come up with a candidates' formula to be accepted by all," sources said. The Hasawis and the National Islamic Alliance (NIA) were coordinating with each other to form a combined alliance in the second district where Anwar Bu Khamseen was to represent the Hasawis. The NIA would be represented by either Abdul Mohsen Jamal or Ahmed Jouhar (Dr. Hassan Jouhar's brother).
Al-Mutawwa belongs to the Hasawis and his running will reshuffle all cards," sources said. Furthermore, sources predicted that the NIA might coordinate with the Peace and Justice Alliance in case Al-Mutawa insists on running for elections in the second district, which would then force Bu Khamseen to shift his constituency to the first district in 2008.
Meanwhile, a government official recently said that the government planned to issue a special decree organizing parliamentary elections on April 5, 2009 and said that voting may take place on May 16, 2009. Meanwhile, a number of former MPs including Jamal Al-Kandari and Nasser Al-Duwaila announced that they will not nominate themselves for the next parliamentary elections.
Maj General Khalid Al Saimi, the Assistant Undersecretary for Legal Affairs at the Ministry of Interior said that Kuwaiti law requires all National Assembly candidates to not prepare their election headquarters until they had officially nominated themselves for elections. He added that 10 days will be assigned for receiving individuals who wish to nominate themselves for parliament, Al-Watan reported.
Former MP Al-Kandari then thanked Kuwaiti citizens who asked him to nominate himself for the next election but announced that he would not run for office. Former MP Talal Al-Ayar said he still has not decided if he would run for parliament or not.
