'Unite against threats'

KUWAIT CITY, May 1: Islamist opposition MP Falah Al-Sawwagh thanked the Ministry of Defense on Sunday for canceling its decision to buy two cargo planes but said that the matter should be investigated by the Audit Bureau as the deal is surrounded by suspicions.

Furthermore, MPs Shuaib Al-Muwaizri and Naji Abdulhadi said that the deal did not pass through the correct channels and requested the upcoming government to handle all controversial and questionable issue with transparency if it seeks to protect national interests and public funds.

Meanwhile, Al-Sawwagh said that the recent statements by General Hassan Firouzabadi, the chief of staff of Iran's armed forces is not surprising in light of the country's interference in the Kingdom of Bahrain and the discovery of a spy network in Kuwait. What is required during this period, he added, is Gulf unity and one stance on the occurrences within the political arena.

AFP reported on Sunday that a top Iranian military officer denounced what he called an "Arab dictatorial front" and claimed that the "(Arabian) Gulf has belonged to Iran forever." He also denounced "plots" by the Gulf Arab petro-monarchies to "carve out an identity for themselves by rejecting the identity of others," referring to Iran.

"The Persian Gulf has always been, is and shall always belong to Iran," the general said. Firouzabadi, speaking on the annual "National Day of the Persian Gulf", also condemned the regional Arab monarchies for refusing to call the waterway between Iran and its Arab neighbours by its "historical name".
