BALI, Indonesia, Dec 13 (KUNA) -- Kuwait is greatly concerned at issues on environment protection and climate change that makes sustainable development achievable, head of the Kuwaiti delegation to the international conference on climate change said on Thursday.

Kuwait has signed the agreement on climate change and the Kyoto Protocol due to its belief in the importance of coordinating efforts to protect planet Earth from pollution, Undersecretary of Oil Abbas Naqi said in his speech at the UN 13th party agreement for climate change meeting.

In this respect, His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah allocated USD 150 million for research and studies related to environment and energy for a fund that was established during the final OPEC Summit in Riyadh under the initiative of Saudi Arabia and with the participation of Qatar, the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Naqi said the "Riyadh Statement" issued by the OPEC Summit included a clause on environment and climate change, a matter which signifies the keenness of OPEC member states to cooperate with other countries to find solutions to possible environmental dangers.

He urged industrial countries to commit to their obligations of the Kyoto Protocol and to transfer clean technology. He said the Carbon Capture and Storage technology (CCS) is considered among the promising technologies to lessen the dangers of climate change caused by the emission of poisonous gas.

Finally, Naqi hoped the participating countries would share consensus on the regional and international levels to make the conference a success.

Up to 10,000 delegates from about 190 countries are taking part in the 13th UN Climate Change Conference, 3-14 December, seeking a new strategy for handling the phenomenon after the Kyoto Protocol ends in 2012.
