The Kuwait Economic Society (KES) held a meet-and-greet dinner for new members on Tuesday at its in Shuwaikh. Speaking to members, KES chairperson Dr Rola Dashti outlined the society's role in dealing with the current local economic crisis, emphasizing that it has been working closely with the government, identifying the causes and offering various solutions.

The government must take action, Dashti stressed, as the consequences of delaying the implementation of the proposed measures could be extremely serious. "Kuwait has already lost around KD 4 billion in the current economic crisis," she explained. Among the guests at the diner were a number of international financial experts visiting Kuwait to attend an economic workshop held by KES, entitled 'Risk and Management.'

The Kuwait Economic Society chose this topic a while before the global economic crisis occurred. Holding this workshop now, however, is of great importance, as it tackles the current issues," said Mary MacPherson, Program Director of the Vital Voices' Middle East and North Africa Businesswomen's Network.

Vital Voices has members from 12 organizations and the Kuwait Economic Society is one of these organizations," MacPherson explained, adding that this is not the first time that Vital Voices has attended a KES workshop. "We just attended a workshop in Bahrain. It was held by the Bahrain Business Women's Society, and the title of the workshop was 'Strategic Leadership.'

MacPherson explained that one of the most important issues to be discussed at the workshop is the Free Trade Agreement between Kuwait and the US and ways in which this agreement can be leveraged.

I'm pleased to attend social events such as this one, particularly because it is being held by an NGO," said Dr. Nada Al-Mutawa, a researcher for Kuwait University's Center for Strategic and Future Studies. Al-Mutawa spoke to the members of the society about her most recent dissertation on Kuwaiti-Asian economic diplomacy relations, with particular focus on the Japanese-Kuwaiti economic relations.

Al-Mutawa explained that numerous Kuwaiti MPs have visited Japan since the 70's. "Kuwaiti MPs at that time had the foresight to strengthen their economic relations with Asian countries, and specifically with Japan, which was always willing to host Kuwait.

Speaking of the event from a social perspective, Board Member Mariam Bushihri said that this dinner was "great because it allows new members to meet the older members, in addition to the fact that it has many social benefits." "The Kuwait Economic Society always tries to reach out to the community and its own members. A diner like this gives a way for many channels of networking to occur," she pointed out.
