CAIRO, Nov 30 (KUNA) -- Kuwaiti fencing team earned Saturday night a number of silver and bronze medals at the Arab 18th championship in Cairo, in which 200 athletes from 11 different countries are taking part.

Head of Kuwaiti delegation to the championship Ali Malallah told Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) that the national athlete, Khalid Al-Shimmari, won the silver medal in the "Epee" category after he was defeated by his Egyptian rival.

Qaisar Al-Zamil and his fellow Abdul-Mohsen Shahrayan won bronze medals in the individual "Epee" and "Floret" category, Malallah added.

He lauded the national fencers' friendly attitude towards their counterparts in the championship, noting that they spared no effort in performing their utmost to honor their homeland.

On his part, the team coach Kathim Malallah stressed that there was a heated competition, namely among the host - Egypt - and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Syria and Jordan.

The Kuwaiti official praised the event's organizers and their outstanding preparation to host the game, in addition to their endless support for the participants.

Kuwaiti fencers are going to take part in a number of sport events, including the world youth championship scheduled to be held in Russia next April along with Qatar's Grand Prix, the tournament in Iran, and Sheikh Fahad Al-Ahmad Fencing Championship in Kuwait.

As part of training, Malallah said the team went to training camps in Hungary and Germany and competed in local competitions that were sponsored by His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and Public Authority for Youth and Sports.
