Amman - A delegation from the Korean International Cooperation Agency KOICA is currently visiting the Kingdom to finalize the actual implementation plan of "Capacity Building for Clean Development Mechanism Project".

The Project was earmarked by the South Korean Government in grants equivalent of 500 thousand USD through KOICA by signing the Record of Discussions(R/D) on September 27, 2010 between the representatives of KOICA and the Ministry of Environment.

The KOICA delegation includes specialists from KOICA-contracted Project Management Company (PMC), a consortium of Korea Standard Agency and Ecoeye Co. Ltd., which has excellent record of CDM projects consulting service in Korea.

After a series of discussions with the officials concerned from Ministries of Environment, Energy and Mineral Resources, Industry and Trade, Transport, Water and Irrigation, Agriculture, Municipal Affairs and Amman Municipality as well as site visits to major CDM projects, the team will sign the outcomes of the discussion.

The major project components comprise Capacity Building Program(CPB) in Korea and in Jordan through seminars and workshops. Sharing Korea's experiences, the CPBs are expected to help the participants understand about not only the global climate change issues and green growth policies, but also the techniques of how to identify and formulate the CDM Projects in Jordan.

Eight CBPs shall be further implemented in the form of two preliminary and four advanced courses and two workshops jointly participated by Korean and local stakeholders until the end of 2012. This year, four training courses and one workshop are to be held in Korea while the rest of courses and workshop will be organized in 2012. A colorful mix of lecturing and site visits shall be offered to the participants. In particular, the project ensures the participation from various Ministries and private sector in order to expand international CDM specialist network, promoting public awareness in CDM.

As the economic damage caused by natural disaster increased 480% for the past 20 years and 90 percent of this catastrophic loss worldwide are related to climate change, Korea has made various efforts to relieve the climate change by supporting East Asia Climate Partnership with 200 million USD and enacting climate-friendly policies nationally. Korea is also enthusiastic in CDM development with 53 CDM projects registered and 65 million tCER issued while Jordan has two registered CDM projects and more than 10 projects in pipeline.

As there has been dramatic increase of interest in CDM and carbon market recently, related national policy, public research and local expert has become an essential factor for the successful carbon business including CDM. Considering the current situation, the Jordanian government is expected to strengthen the capacity for CDM project identification, implementation, monitoring and evaluation, CER issuance/trade, the accessibility of international carbon market, and, ultimately, contributing the sustainable development of Jordan by doing this project.
