Abu Dhabi, June 27th, 2011 (WAM) -- Kalima, the translation initiative of the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage, has published the Arabic translation of Luc Ferrys "Apprendre a vivre: Traite de philosophie a l'usage des jeunes generations" (Learning to Live: a philosophical treaty for the young generations use).
Through this work Ferry, French philosopher and university professor, attempts to introduce the history of philosophy to readers, students and culture seekers. The author presents this work in an educational style, giving readers the feeling that they are being encouraged to move from one concept to another, whilst exploring the definitions linked to these ideas. The book attempts to present the developmental stages of philosophy, from its inception in ancient Greece, to the present day. Ferry discusses some iconic names in the history of philosophy and its development, such as Socrates, Marc Aurele, Descartes, Pascal, Rousseau and Kant. The Author dedicates a large proportion of his research to Friedrich Nietzsche, before exploring the works of Heidegger and Comte Sponville. When considering religious philosophy, Ferry considers the work of St. Augustine, as the best representative of the Christian philosophy. The author also looks at philosophy of the Buddhist faith, and reflects on the ideas of avoiding the pain of separation and death, through a reduction in emotional attachment. Reading this book can be considered important for those who wish to learn about the history of philosophy. This work may also be pertinent to those wishing to explore the meaning of life, and reflect upon on the reality of death, hope of salvation, and the possibility of an afterlife.
