Abu Dhabi, March 14th, 2012 (WAM) -- In an international gathering of oil & gas specialists, Dr. John Barry, Shells Vice President Technical & Production (MENA) and Abu Dhabi Country Chair was a key note speaker at the 2012 Carbon Capture & Storage (CCS) and the Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) conference.
The event, organized by the Active Communications International (ACI) was held in Abu Dhabi with the objective of discussing the development of innovative CCS strategies in the Middle East as well as sharing the latest EOR experiences from global projects. In his presentations, Dr. Barry highlighted Shells spectrum of technologies and application areas of CCS and EOR as well as shared the state of the art examples. He further outlined the importance of governmental support to CCS and EOR projects which will be required to close the commercial gap for earlier deployment projects. Dr. Barry also discussed how the future of energy will be in 2050 stating that world population will increase to 9 million people, with up to 75% of them living in cities, and that the number of vehicles in the streets will more than double. As population in developing countries shifts from poverty to middle class more than double the energy will be required, and there will be 5 to 10 times as much energy from renewable sources. Dr. Barry said: "EOR technology is already being developed and deployed in Shell ventures globally, including most notably in this region in Petroleum Development Oman".
