The Iraqi foreign minister has called for updating the Non-Aligned Movement, to reconsider the structure of the movement and to reach a comprehensive solution for conflict on the basis of international legitimacy and the Arab peace initiative.
A statement issued by the Iraqi Foreign Ministry said Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari spoke in his speech while chairing the Iraqi delegation in the meeting of foreign ministers of the Non-Aligned Movement.
He spoke about the "international political and economic issues, foremost sustainable development and development in the least developed countries, achieving the Millennium Development Goals, the problems of water and desertification, human rights, the effects of climate change, facing terrorism that threatens social peace and security of people's and countries of the Non-Aligned Movement".
With regard to the ongoing political developments in Syria, Zebari said: "Iraq participated in the efforts to find a peaceful solution for the crisis and it supports any international or regional effort in this regard because Iraq fears of the repercussions of the crisis and its impact on the situation in the region. Iraq supports the mission of UN and Arab envoy al-Akhdar al-Ibrahimi to find a solution to the crisis.
"Iraq supports the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people for freedom, democracy and self-determination, in addition to the peaceful transition of power through dialogue and according to the disciplined political process without military intervention."
Zebari concluded his statement by calling for a need to "reconsider the structure of the Non-Aligned Movement and update it in a way that responds to evolution on the one hand and to possible changes taking place in the international system on the other."
