Iran and the Middle East's largest carmaker, Iran Khodro Company (IKCO), has announced plans to design and manufacture 1600cc versions of XUM engines in the near future in line with its strategy of improving its cars.
IKCO Vice President for Quality and Product Development Mir Javad Soleimani said the current XUM is a 1900cc engine that would power Peugeot Pars sedans soon, IRNA reported.
Elaborating on IKCO's plans to optimize XUM engines and design and produce its 1600cc version, Soleimani noted that fuel economy of the engine would increase to 6 liters per 100 km.
Following Peugeot Pars, Peugeot 405 and some other products of IKCO would be equipped with 1900cc XUM engine.
The design and development of XUM engines has led to the production of rear axle cars, as it would also save about €1,000 in the cost of each car unit.
IKCO's vice president announced that ten Pars sedans have been equipped with XUM engines to undergo the required tests.
"IKCO will market about 2,000 Pars sedans with XUM engines this February," he said.
This 1900cc, eight-valve engine produces 107 horsepower with 152 Newton meters of torque at 3500 rpm.
XUM meets Euro IV standards and uses 8.4 liters of gasoline per 100 km.
XUM currently comes in gasoline type, but IKCO intends to produce the CNG-powered prototype in the near future.
Achieving self-sufficiency, optimizing fuel economy and minimizing dependence on foreign currencies have pushed IPCO (IKCO Power Train Co.) forward to develop strategic engine series, while phasing out old gas guzzlers.
