Iran's leading automaker Iran Khodro Company (IKCO) announced a plan to mass-produce a new domestically-built car engine in the Iranian year starting March 2012.

The car manufacturer said in a Wednesday statement that the new 1400cc EF4 engine, which meets Euro-5 emission standard, will be installed on home-designed passenger vehicle Runna, Presstv reported. IKCO chief Javad Najmeddin placed special importance on the production of the 'nature-friendly' engine and noted that EF4 will be produced using '95 percent domestic parts'.

The 1400cc engine is designed and manufactured in both gasoline- and natural-gas-based versions, the statement added.

It also said that the biggest automaker in the Middle East is prepared to assemble 25,000 Runna cars next year.

IKCO also seeks to increase Runna's production to around 150,000 units per annum, 25 percent of which will be slated to hit overseas markets.

Earlier last week, IKCO announced that the Group of Eight Developing Countries (D8) had chosen the company to design the platform for their joint car.

The D8 industry ministers in a meeting in Istanbul from October 4-6 appointed IKCO to design the D8 joint car in cooperation with Turkey and Indonesia, read a statement released by IKCO on Sunday.

D8 members include Iran, Turkey, Malaysia, Pakistan, Nigeria, Egypt, Bangladesh and Indonesia. D8 members also agreed to promote research and development activities in the fields of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) technology, hybrid technology, plug-in cars, new materials and nano-technology.

"Improving the quality, level of technology and also the capacity if supply chain was another issue focused on by D8 vehicle working group," the statement continued.

Ukraine Expo
IKCO displayed two of its latest sedans, Denna and Runna, in Iran's solo exhibition currently underway in Ukraine.

Another two products of the company, Soren ELX powered by the turbocharged EF7 engine and Samand LX supplied by TU5 engine are also on display at the 7-day expo, the IKCO website reported on Tuesday.

The exclusive exhibition of Iran's export commodities kicked off in Kiev, on October 18, with Iranian Minister of Industry, Mine and Trade Mehdi Ghazanfari in attendance.

The event hosts about 54 Iranian companies in various specialized areas. IKCO was founded in 1962 and is currently regarded as the biggest automaker in the Middle East.

The company received a special trophy at Tehran's Third International Nanotechnology Festival in 2010, as the leading company in nano-related auto industry.
