Tehran - While confirming warning to two enemy spy planes last year, a high-ranking Iranian military official stressed on Sunday that Tehran has the ability to target enemy spy planes beyond borders. Two enemy spy planes were forced to return by timely warning of Iran, Commander of the Khatam al-Anbiya Air Defense Base Brigadier General Farzad Esmaili told a press conference held to mark Air Defense Day.

"Khatam al-Anbiya Air Defense Base is able to detect and act against enemy spy airplanes and missiles beyond borders," he said.

Pointing to the existence of sensitive nuclear sites in Iran, the Commander noted that no suspicious airplane would be allowed to enter Iran's air space.

"Iran's integrated air defense network does not depend on Russian S-300 missile system,' he said, adding that Iran has filed suit against Russia following the latter's refusal to deliver S-300 missile system.

He then pointed to Iran's breakthrough in defense industries despite sanctions and said, 'We have managed to get access to technological know-how of sophisticated radar systems. We have gained access to the capability despite the fact that it is a challenge for many Third World countries."

Russia has claimed that it is unable to enforce the 2007 agreement with Iran on sale of S-300 air defense systems to Iran due to the sanctions imposed by the UN Security Council on the Islamic Republic.
