Sharjah: Brandon Martis of Our Own English High School, Sharjah, cracked the first century in the Maxtalent Global Vision Cup inter-school cricket tournament being held under the auspices of the Sharjah Cricket Council.
Martis’ unbeaten knock of 126 came off 66 balls with 11 hits to the boundary and six sixes — he was also involved in a mammoth unbroken 197-run partnership with Mohammad Ajmal (40no). The opening pair thrashed the Sharjah Indian School attack for 20 overs without being separated. In reply, Sharjah Indian School were bowled out for 95 and Our Own won the under-13s match by 102 runs.
Martis said: “This century is the greatest moment of my life and I am grateful to Maxtalent for giving me and my colleagues a stage to perform.”
Sudhakar Shetty, head coach of Maxtalent and chief organiser of the tournament, told Gulf News that Martis deserves a reward for his knock. “We have offered Martis free training at the Maxway Institute worth Dh400, apart from the player of the match award,” he said.
The tournament also highlighted the importance of fielding. In the Winchester School-Delhi Private School (DPS), Dubai, match, Aryan Larka, the DPS skipper, made a spectacular one-handed catch to title the game in his side’s favour.
Chasing DPS’ moderate total of 129 for 4 in 20 overs, Winchester were going strong with a 54-run partnership between Sadaf and Dhyan Shah when Larka took a left-handed catch in the covers to dismiss Sadaf for 39.
Though Shah remained unbeaten on 26, Larka bagged three wickets for 24 runs to give his team an exciting 12-run victory. Earlier, DPS were helped to their total through Vivek Aditya’s unbeaten 59.
Elsewhere, DPS Sharjah beat St Mary’s Catholic school through their star all-rounder Devnath Menon, who hit a quick 26 to swell his team’s total and also bowled well.
