MUSCAT -- Information technology (IT) has always been one of the best methods for education, and to get the best knowledge. Many parents have started teaching their children online instead of sending them to school, because they do not believe that schools provide the best education.

Still, others prefer to send their children to school so that they may socialise and communicate with people, and learn to be more open to the world.

The Comex Exhibition 2011, currently happening at the Oman International Exhibition Centre, displays the many ways and means of education that shows that education through IT can be found at school and in higher education.

To explain how IT helps to educate students at many different education levels, the Smart Board is used in many schools nowadays. It is much easier to use than the normal whiteboards traditionally used in classrooms.

The Smart Board is actually a supersise touch screen monitor that is attached to a computer and a projector. The Smart Board cannot work if the board, the computer or the projector are not attached together.

It works through a piece of software that is called NoteBook.

This software is the most important technology for the Smart Board, because it enables one to use the Smart Board as a touch screen.

This IT innovation is very helpful when it comes to education. Teachers can teach a lot of subjects much better than using the normal board.

For example, they can save their lessons for future use; draw many different shapes; involve motion to the lessons; and, incorporate speakers to the Smart Board lesson.

The Smart Board is so useful at every level in education, whether used for older students in higher education or younger students in other education levels.

Another example of the importance of information technology in education is how it is used by the Ministry of Education (MoE).

MOE recently launched the Educational Portal, which allows the guardian or person responsible for a student (father, uncle) to check the student's marks and attendance. Its aim is to make things easier for everyone -- teachers, guardians, and the students themselves.

Naser al Amri, an employee in the Ministry of Education said: "I disagree with whoever says that IT is not for children, because most of the school students have shown a real understanding to it."

Al Amri also confirmed that IT is important for everyone. "IT is the language of this age, especially in the world of business."

When asked should children be taught at home or sent to school, Al Amri said: "I prefer the children should be sent to schools that provide IT technologies, because the learning is much more organised at schools than home."

He also noted that the main reason they are participating in the Comex exhibition this year is to deliver such information correctly; to clear any misunderstanding, and to convince the community that IT and Education are interrelated.

There are many other devices, software, and companies, related to IT and education on display this year at the Comex Exhibition 2011, which will go on until the April 29.

It is a great opportunity if you have children at home, and you want to find out what is the latest in IT and education. All you have to do is just to come down to the Oman Exhibition Centre and check it out yourself.
