DAMASCUS - Industrialists and merchants on Saturday said that the government's decision to halt importing some materials, which their customs exceed 5%, meets their demands and contribute to enhancing the national industry.

Ruba Abboud Rajiha, Head of Businesswomen Committee at Damascus Countryside Chamber of Commerce, said the decision is a practical step that will increase factories' work and enhance their productive and marketing capabilities, especially the fabric sector.

Rajiha pointed out that factories, after the decision, will have to raise their work periods and, consequently, triple the number of employees.

For his part, store owner Hisham Dayyan, said that the decision will help in creating more job opportunities.

"Any factory has at least 25 employees, which means about 25 families to be supported. Importing these materials has affected the production level of the factories and caused losing some jobs", Dayyan added.

He indicated that industrialists are with the measures taken by the government to support citizens, adding that industrialists should meet their commitments through providing high-quality goods that regain confidence in national products.

Amer Hammoud, fabric store owner, said that the decision supports national industry and boosts customers' confidence in national products.

Earlier, the cabinet decided to halt, temporarily, importing some materials which their customs exceed 5%, except for the basic goods needed by the Syrian citizens.
