MUSCAT -- The Industrial Innovation Centre (IIC) has recently approved three new innovative projects.
The first project is geared towards development of a new product, the second project is for improvement of tools used on the various stages of production process and the third project is for streamlining the overall production process, from the receiving of orders to the delivery of merchandise to customers, it was announced in a press statement yesterday.
The first project involves research and development (R&D) for a new product that has promising demand prospects in the local and the international market.
The success of the R&D being conducted may lead to registration for a patent for the invention of a new product. The project has the potential of recycling discarded newspapers, thereby producing useful product from waste paper.
The second project aims at improving several manufacturing process stages by developing better tools for each stage of the manufacturing process. The success of the project will not only improve product quality, it is also expected to reduce the cost by increasing efficiency, reducing manual activities and the time required to manufacture the products. This project also has potential for patent registration for the invention of new tools.
The third project is for streamlining the overall process, which includes the design of equipment layout and the removing of bottlenecks in the manufacturing process, as well as increasing efficiency at each stage of the manufacturing process.
This project aims at improving the manufacturing process from the initial stage of the process, that is, at the front desk where new orders are received and processed, to the delivery of merchandise to customers.
Success of this project will not only reduce merchandise delivery time, but will also smooth out the manufacturing process and inventory control of both raw materials and manufactured products. By enhancing the efficiency of the manufacturing process, manufacturing cost is expected to be reduced, hence increasing profit margin and competitiveness.
The conduction of these R&D projects will be in collaboration with academic institutions that will provide expertise and laboratory facilities to conduct the projects. Such collaborations do not only improve Omani products, allowing them to compete with international products, they also build-up capacity of Omani industries and research institutions.
The innovation of industries involves R&D in existing processes, products and services and development of new ones. These three categories are the basis of any industry and encapsulate most industrial activities.
The Industrial Innovation Center is providing consultancy and financial support for conducting innovative R&D projects, in collaboration with both industries and research institutions, in order to achieve its goals that have been set by its parent organisations -- namely, The Research Council (TRC) and the Public Establishment for Industrial Estates (PEIE) -- so as to boost Omani industries and help build-up capacity.
